Black out the windshield trim. I used 3M pearl black vinyl. Behold photos:
Before:
After:
Need to go over it with a heat gun to get some minor bubbles and stuff out. Also need to get a hardtop and wrap it the same color... hmm...

Kind of like

Looks great! I’d do the mirrors, too

i prefer the before.

I’d like to see it with the top down, I think it would’ve been better if it was slightly lighter to match the grey soft top. With a black hard top I think it would look really nice tho.

There’s a reason Mazda did it from the the factory with the ND. :)

Mine came that way from the factory. Then again it had a tan top.

Hardtop coming soon.

On yours it looks nice, but I’m thinking it might look odd with my light tan top...

Alternate solution: get a black Miata in the first place.
![]() 12/06/2016 at 21:09 |

That’s cheating.

Why would I want to cover the pretty Montego Blue Mica paint. Hell that part of the body is the only part where the paint is in perfect condition.
![]() 12/06/2016 at 21:31 |

Why not buy one with it already done?
Jk actually surprised how different it looks. Will you do it to the mirrors or leave them alone?

Me too
![]() 12/06/2016 at 21:44 |

That’s brilliant. I may have to try it on my Sky RL. Perhaps attempt a color match.

I assume there will a post for the hardtop? I like Miatas with hardtops...

Got you covered in the meantime while Jake continues his hardtop hunt.

Now do this picture with the new lights.

Next month. Hopefully.

It does look weird with a tan top, that’s why I’m planning a black soft top when it’s time to replace mine.

I’m trying to convince my mom to do this to her Sky. I’m going to use the leftovers to black out some of the chrome on her car.
![]() 12/06/2016 at 22:05 |

Hell yeah, well done. Also, I recommend getting a hardtop that’s already black.
![]() 12/06/2016 at 22:13 |

It is already black, but it’s kind of a beat up black and it’s not *metallic* black. Might as well waste $70 on vinyl and then have to do it three times over because I messed something up :P

Before or after the I put on these new black Heliums? :B
![]() 12/06/2016 at 22:17 |

Prep half a dozen times, vinyl once...or at least that’s how it’s supposed to go! Black metallic would look awesome on both of them combined.

Send me the old ones.
![]() 12/06/2016 at 22:19 |

Yeah, the hardtop is just an *absolutely enormous* chunk of vinyl that has to all go on at once and it’s all curved. Eugh. Gonna suck some major ass.

Hnnngg....
I’m typically not a big fan of NBs but that one looks very clean and simple, like a Miata should.
![]() 12/06/2016 at 22:26 |

Pops and I tried it once on a cold winter day...the vinyl straight-up ripped while trying to stretch it out on the hardtop. We gave up and I ended up cutting a deal with a local body shop guru who needed a hardtop to make a mold for his Corvette Summer-themed Lemons Miata.

Keep it clean, keep it fun, and above all, keep it reliable!

It’s not often I hear that last bit from anyone on oppo :P

I hate the different accent colors. I’ve got a white car with chrome door handles and wheels and fog light surrounds, silver windshield trim and vent slats, black lower grill and fake hood vents and headlight surrounds. I want to make it all either black or white.

If I own a black Miata what should I do?
![]() 12/06/2016 at 23:42 |

Wrap the rest of it metallic blue.

I have thought about painting mine black but I don’t really think it makes much difference to the look of the cars. But it is starting to grow on me after seeing yours. Maybe the paint color makes a difference.

I’m not sure how many of us on Oppo commuted to work 100 miles a day in a Miata and the job is their first engineering job they ever had since graduating college. Needless to say, I can’t afford break that could potentially sideline the Miata for more than a few days. I learned from my college roommate who totaled his Mustang a few miles after Tail of the Dragon...he still had to report to work later that week and he ended up borrowing my Miata.

If I wasn’t half-serious about being super-competitive next year in autocross, then I proabably would consider selling these. That said, I’m thinking fresh RE-71Rs once the weather warms up.
![]() 12/07/2016 at 20:52 |

You’re near TaTD? I’m hoping to go to Miatas at the Gap next year if I’m able to get my car to the point where I feel safe doing all that.
![]() 12/07/2016 at 21:08 |

Technically, I’m about half a day’s drive away. Roomie crashed it (with Desu-San-Desu sitting shotgun, all caught on video) during Day 2 of our big 2-day Mountain Trip that started in Greenville, SC, to TaTD (day 1), through TN, and back to SC using the Blue Ridge Parkway (day 2). I’d like to attend MaTG but I think I might get in trouble if I decide on punching-in Shoult’s annoying face.
![]() 12/07/2016 at 21:30 |

TaTD is about 13 hours away for me. Looking forward to driving it, from what I’ve heard there’s a 30mph speed limit that takes some courage to attain, much less speed. Sounds like basically 20 minutes of autocrossing.
Who’s Shoult?
![]() 12/07/2016 at 21:53 |
|
Having done TaTD in the Miata, I have to say the surrounding roads are better beceause these are less low-speed technical turns and more highway-speed friendly momentum-favoring corners. Boone, NC was absolutely a riot, including Route 421 “ The Snake ” since it’s more of the latter. TaTD is neat if you can do it with low traffic levels, but it was more fun chasing cars at 50-60 mph a few miles away.
Shoult’s a grumpy old Miata.net member who loves to correct people with his asshole “I know more than you” attitude; I’m -this- close to wanting to smash one of his lights out if it weren’t for the fact I don’t care for jail time.

So... have you been on miataturbo? :D

Haha, no and thank goodness!

I love it! Where would I be without Jake from oppos car advice
![]() 12/08/2016 at 08:49 |

Alternate for a hardtop that I did, and I think looks nice: matte black spray paint. The matte finish makes it resemble the black soft top.
After seeing these photos, I may need to get out that can of matte black and do the windshield surround to match the top.

Silver of course.
